Private Group Surf Lessons in Malibu with Expert Local Instructors

There's something about learning to surf with people you actually like. The encouragement when someone finally pops up, the collective groan when a set rolls through and nobody catches it, the photos that end up framed.
A year later, nobody remembers how many waves they caught. They remember who ate it on the biggest wave of the day, who wouldn't stop singing on the paddle out, and who cried a little on the drive home…in a good way.
Here's what you need to know before you book.

Every group is private. Always.
This is the first thing to understand. When you book a group lesson with us, you're not joining a class of strangers. You're booking an exclusive session, your group, your coach, your beach. We don't mix sessions or add people to fill spots. If you book six people, those six people are your group for the entire 90 minutes.
That matters more than it sounds. A private group means your coach can actually watch each person, adjust instruction to fit each student, and spend real focused energy working with whoever needs help most.
Most group lessons start the same way.
Half the group is excited.
One person is convinced they’re going to be terrible.
Someone inevitably says, “I’m just here for the photos.”
Then 20 minutes later, that same person is usually the loudest one celebrating after catching their first wave.
How the Groups Work
Our standard lessons run 90 minutes and accommodate groups of up to eight people, all bookable directly online. Prefer to keep it small? A solo lesson or a duo works just as well. Got a bigger crew? Nine or more? Give us a call and we'll sort it out.
Stingray’s group program is built on more than two decades of surf instruction experience. Before founding Malibu Surf Coach, he oversaw large surf camp programs that served more than 100 kids and young adults per day during peak season. Helping groups learn together safely, confidently, and at their own pace is one of Malibu Surf Coach’s specialties.

Groups of six or more automatically get two coaches on the water. Not because we have to, but because it's the right way to do it. With two coaches in the lineup, nobody gets left on the shoulder waiting for feedback while their friends are already riding.
We bring everything: surfboards, wetsuits, and instruction.
We start beginners on larger, more stable boards and progress to smaller boards as skills improve.
Think of it like earning the next belt in karate. Each step builds on the last.
Our wetsuits are hand-washed and cared for after every use because everyone deserves a clean, comfortable suit. Most importantly, we bring patience, encouragement, and positive energy. You show up. We take care of the rest.
We even gave our group sizes their own names. There's the Trio Experience, Party of Four, Five and Thriving, Six Pack Session, Surf Squad of Seven, and the Epic Eight. Pick your crew.
Most groups spend more time deciding where to grab tacos, pizza, or sushi afterward than worrying about the surf lesson itself. (Psst... we have plenty of local recommendations. Just ask.)
Where to Take Group Surf Lessons in Malibu
Our primary teaching location is Broad Beach, a semi-private stretch at the north end of Zuma that most tourists or even some SoCal locals don’t know about. Broad offers a safe sandy bottom, with more user-friendly waves than you’d find at neighboring Zuma. On any given summer weekend, the main Zuma parking lot is chaotic. Broad Beach isn't. We are also a mobile school, which offers the luxury of rotating to alternate surf locations for our advanced beginners, and returning clients with packages such as the “Surf With Stingray”.

Since Stingray lives along PCH near one of our favorite teaching locations, he routinely checks conditions and provides clients with real-time morning updates and surf forecasts.
One of the advantages of working with a local coach is having someone make the call on where to surf that day. Based on conditions, experience level, and goals, we'll choose the location that gives you the best opportunity to succeed and have fun.
We have several teaching locations throughout West Malibu, many of which offer more user-friendly waves and lighter crowds than the area’s better-known breaks. Among a few of our secret spots that won’t be mentioned here, we love teaching at spots like County Line, Leo Carrillo, Staircase, and Zeros. Your confirmation email or communication with your surf coach will always include exactly where to meet.
Why Learn with Expert Local Instructors in Malibu?
Not all Malibu surf lessons are taught by instructors with deep local knowledge of Malibu’s coastline.
At Malibu Surf Coach, our instructors surf these breaks regularly and monitor conditions daily. That matters because Malibu isn’t one beach. Conditions can vary significantly between Broad Beach, Zuma, County Line, Leo Carrillo, and Staircase depending on swell size and direction, wind direction, tides, and constantly shifting seasonal sandbars.
Every surf spot has its own personality.

Choosing the right location for the day often has a bigger impact on a beginner’s experience than the size of the surfboard they’re riding. Whether you’re booking a private lesson, family lesson, or group surf lesson in Malibu, choosing the right beach for the conditions can dramatically improve the experience.
With thousands of lessons taught and years of experience surfing Malibu’s coastline, our coaches understand how conditions change from beach to beach and hour to hour. We also know when beaches are likely to be crowded and when conditions are more favorable for learning. Our top priority is getting you on the highest-quality waves possible for your skill level.
What Groups Actually Get Out of It
Most people book group lessons for an occasion, a birthday, a bachelorette, a corporate day out, or a family reunion.
The loudest cheers of the day are almost never for the best surfer in the group. They’re usually for the person who started the lesson saying, “I’m probably not even going to stand up.”

That’s what people remember. Not who caught the biggest wave or looked the coolest. It’s the moment someone surprises themselves and the entire group celebrates with them.
What most people don’t expect is how quickly complete beginners can progress with the right coaching. Our coaches are focused on getting everyone on a wave, not just the naturally athletic ones.
A lot of that comes down to Stingray’s ability to read people, not just waves. After teaching thousands of people from around the world, with varying levels of ocean experience and comfort, he can usually tell who’s excited, who’s nervous, and who’s quietly wondering if they made a mistake signing up.

He’s been there himself. Instead of pushing people before they’re ready, he meets them where they are, patiently helps them build confidence, and creates an environment where beginners feel comfortable asking questions and trying something new.
By the end of 90 minutes, most groups have:
Stood up on a surfboard consistently
Caught enough waves to sleep like a baby that night
Learned enough about ocean reading to feel safer in the water
Taken more photos than they planned to
The social part takes care of itself. We just provide the waves.

Common Group Lesson Questions
Can we split into ability levels within our group?
Absolutely. If your group has a mix of first-timers and people who've surfed before, we account for that. Our coaches will assess everyone at the start and adjust instruction accordingly. Groups of six or more have two coaches in the water, which makes it even easier to work with different skill levels simultaneously.
What if someone in our group wants to watch instead of surf?
No problem at all. Some people prefer to cheer from the beach, take photos, or just enjoy the scene. We only charge for active participants — spectators (animal and human) are always welcome.
Can we request a specific beach location?
You can express a preference and we'll do our best, but we reserve the right to choose the location based on conditions that day. Our priority is always putting your group in the best possible surf for your skill level. We'll always let you know where to meet in advance.
Is there a minimum age for group lessons?
We welcome ages 3-103. Younger kids do great in our group setting, our coaches are experienced working with children and know how to keep lessons fun, safe, and age-appropriate.
