General Surf Lesson Questions
Surf lesson pricing at Malibu Surf Coach starts at $150 per session for a solo private lesson. Group sessions are priced per person and become more affordable the more people join, making it a great option for families, friend groups, and parties. We also offer multi-lesson packages for those who want to commit to real progression, which bring the per-session cost down significantly. Board rentals are available separately if needed. For current pricing and availability, head to our surf lessons page or contact us directly, we're flexible and happy to find an option that works for your group.
Honestly, Malibu is a year-round destination and I've been teaching here for over 25 years, there's always a wave worth riding. Summer brings smaller, cleaner swells that are ideal for beginners and families, with warm water and long sunny days. Fall is my personal favorite: the crowds thin out, the water is still warm from summer, and the swells start to build. Winter brings the biggest waves and the most powerful conditions, which is when intermediate and advanced surfers really get to push their limits. Spring is underrated; consistent swells, uncrowded beaches, and the water starts warming again. The semi-private location at Broad Beach where we teach is a genuine swell magnet that works in most conditions, which means we can almost always find the right wave for your level no matter when you visit.
Not at all — in fact, first-time surfers are my specialty. Over 25 years of teaching I've developed a method that gets complete beginners standing and riding waves in a single session, regardless of fitness level or swimming ability. You don't need to know how to swim, you don't need to have been on a board before, and you don't need to be young or athletic. What you need is a willingness to try something new and trust the process. I'll take care of everything else. Some of my most memorable sessions have been with people who arrived convinced they couldn't do it and left the water completely stoked.
Each surf lesson at Malibu Surf Coach runs 90 minutes from start to finish. That includes time on the beach covering safety, ocean awareness, paddling technique, and pop-up mechanics before we ever get in the water so when we paddle out, you're ready. The in-water time is maximized because we do the groundwork first. For multi-session progression coaching, some clients prefer longer or back-to-back sessions, which we can arrange. Unlike some surf schools that rush you in and out to turn over the next group, we're not on a factory schedule, the session ends when it ends.
Both work well for beginners; it really depends on what kind of experience you're after. Private lessons give you my full attention for the entire 90 minutes, which means faster feedback, more personalized coaching, and quicker progression. If you've got a specific goal; standing up on your first try, overcoming nerves, or refining technique, private is the way to go. Group lessons are fantastic for families or friends who want to share the experience together, and there's a real energy to catching your first wave alongside people you care about. Either way, our groups are always small and personal; this isn't a crowded beach operation. You can also add instructors to any group session for a better student-to-coach ratio.
Most of our first-time students are standing and riding waves within the first 15 minutes of getting in the water. That's not a marketing line — it's the result of a 25-year refined teaching method that prepares you properly on the beach before you ever paddle out. By the time your feet hit the water, your body already knows the movement. Some students take a little longer and that's completely fine — the ocean doesn't care about timelines and neither do I. What matters is that you leave the water more confident than when you arrived. The ones who progress fastest are usually the ones who stop thinking and start feeling the wave.
Equipment & Safety
No — all equipment is provided, including soft-top beginner surfboards (Stormblades with easy-carry handles) and wetsuits. Just show up in your swimsuit and we'll take care of the rest. If you have your own board and/or wetsuit, you're welcome to bring it. Board rentals are also available separately if you want to practice on your own outside of lesson time.
For most beginners, a long soft-top surfboard in the 8-9 foot range is the best starting point — exactly what we use at Malibu Surf Coach. The extra length and width give you more stability, more paddle power, and a bigger platform to pop up on, which means more waves ridden and more confidence built faster. Our instructors will always recommend and select the right board for your height, weight, and the conditions of the day. As you progress through lessons, we'll move you onto equipment that matches where your surfing is heading. The right board at the right time makes all the difference.
Yes — and safety is genuinely built into everything we do here, not just listed as a checkbox. We teach primarily at Broad Beach, a semi-private location at the northern end of Zuma that is uncrowded and has consistent beginner-friendly waves. Every lesson begins with ocean safety on the beach: wave reading, rip current awareness, surf etiquette, and how to fall properly. Our instructors are CPR-certified and trained in ocean safety. We use soft-top boards to minimize injury risk. And we always go at your pace, nobody gets pushed into conditions they're not ready for. We've taught kids as young as 3 and adults well into their 70s safely.
A wetsuit isn't always strictly necessary, but we highly recommend it and provide one with every lesson for warmth and comfort. Malibu water temperature can vary significantly by season, and you'll always be more comfortable and surf better when you're not cold. For those who plan to book multiple sessions or come back regularly and tend to run cold, we also recommend picking up a pair of surf booties; your feet will thank you. Everything else you need is provided.
Safety at Malibu Surf Coach is built into every part of the experience. We choose calm, beginner-friendly waves and teach at semi-private locations specifically selected for lower crowd density and consistent conditions. Every lesson includes ocean awareness and surf etiquette instruction before anyone gets in the water. We use soft-top boards to reduce injury risk. Our instructors are CPR-certified. And we always go at your pace, there's no pressure to paddle further out or try waves you're not ready for. If conditions at our primary location aren't right for your level on a given day, we adapt and find somewhere better. The goal isn't just to get you standing on a board — it's to make sure you understand the ocean well enough to stay safe in it.
Surf Coaching & Progression
Most beginners catch their first waves within one or two lessons — that's by design. By the end of a single 90-minute session you'll have stood up and ridden waves. That said, one lesson gives you the foundation; multiple lessons give you the real progression. Mastering surfing takes time and practice, but each session builds directly on the last. Clients who book multi-day intensives (3 sessions over consecutive days, for example) see extraordinary improvement because the muscle memory compounds quickly. If your goal is to surf confidently and independently, a series of 3-5 sessions is where most students find their stride.
Your first lesson at Malibu Surf Coach covers everything you need to get in the water confidently and start catching waves. On the beach we cover ocean awareness, wave reading and timing, paddling technique, and the pop-up — the motion of going from lying on the board to standing. In the water you'll practice balancing and riding small waves to shore. By the end of most first sessions, students have stood up multiple times and ridden waves unassisted. You'll also leave with a working understanding of surf etiquette and rip current awareness — knowledge that makes every future session in the ocean safer and more enjoyable.
Balance and paddling are the two fundamentals that unlock everything else in surfing, and they're exactly what we focus on in our coaching sessions. We teach balance exercises on land before getting in the water — building the muscle memory first so it feels natural when you're on a wave. In the water, balance improves fastest through proper foot positioning and weight distribution. For paddling, we work on core workouts, yoga-style flexibility, and efficient stroke mechanics — because most beginners over-paddle and exhaust themselves before they reach the break. Learning to generate more power with less effort means more waves and more energy for the whole session.
Some great exercises include:
• Pop-up drills (practicing your stance on land)
• Paddling endurance exercises
• Leg & core workouts for balance
• Stretching & yoga for flexibility
That said, the best preparation for surfing is just getting in the water — don't wait until you're fit enough to book. I'll meet you exactly where you are.
Yes — and progression coaching for intermediate and advanced surfers is one of my specialties. After 25+ years teaching and coaching across Hawaii, Australia, the Canary Islands, and Malibu, I've developed a coaching methodology that specifically addresses the plateaus surfers hit at every level. For intermediates that usually means wave selection, bottom turns, and generating real speed on the face of the wave. For more advanced surfers we work on technique refinement, reading complex conditions, and developing a more intentional, stylistic approach. This is coaching in the truest sense — real-time feedback and a structured progression plan. If you've been surfing for a while and feel like you're not improving, a session will show you exactly why and exactly what to change.
Booking & Logistics
We primarily teach at Broad Beach, a semi-private beach at the northern end of Zuma in Malibu. It's uncrowded, consistently beautiful, and produces exactly the kind of waves that are ideal for learning and progression — beginners catch waves easily here, and there's enough variety for more experienced surfers too. Depending on conditions on the day of your lesson, we also teach at County Line, Leo Carrillo, Staircase, and other locations along the Malibu coast. One of the real advantages of booking with Malibu Surf Coach is that I read the conditions every morning and select the best location for your level and the day's swell. You'll receive your exact meeting spot in your booking confirmation.
Fear of the ocean is completely valid, and it's the most common thing I see in new students. The approach at Malibu Surf Coach is always confidence before surfing. We start in shallow water, learning to feel how the waves move and building trust in your own ability to navigate the ocean before anyone gets on a board. We cover ocean safety, practice floating and breathing, and take the time to make sure you're genuinely comfortable before we progress. Taking lessons with an experienced instructor who knows these waters well makes an enormous difference, you're not figuring it out alone. I've helped hundreds of students go from genuinely terrified to completely stoked, including people who couldn't put their face in the water when they arrived.
Malibu Surf Coach is available year-round, and we can often accommodate last-minute bookings as long as conditions are favorable — so even if you're in Malibu this week, it's always worth reaching out. June through August is our busiest season, but we do our best to make it work whenever we can. For the best chance at your preferred date and time during summer, booking a few days ahead is helpful but never required. Call or text us directly at (424) 781-7174 and we'll let you know what's available — we'd rather find a way to get you in the water than turn you away.
Conditions are something I monitor constantly, and I will never put a student in the water in conditions that aren't appropriate for their level. If our primary location isn't right on a given day, we relocate to somewhere that works — Malibu has multiple breaks and I know all of them well. There's almost always somewhere suitable for any skill level. In the rare event that conditions make surfing genuinely impossible, we'll reschedule at no charge. While we can't control the ocean, 25+ years of local knowledge means we know how to read it, and we'll always find you the best possible conditions for your session.
Yes, to both. Lesson packages are available for those who want to commit to real progression — booking multiple sessions is the most effective way to improve and comes at a better rate per session. Multi-day intensives (3 sessions over consecutive days, for example) are particularly effective for visitors who want to make the most of their time in Malibu. Gift certificates are available for purchase through our website and make a genuinely memorable gift for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, quinceañeras, and any occasion where you'd rather give an experience than a thing. Contact us directly if you'd like help choosing the right package or certificate.
Yes — board rentals are available separately for those who want to practice on their own time outside of lessons. All equipment including boards and wetsuits is included with every lesson, so there's nothing extra to bring or rent for your session. If you're interested in renting a board independently, just ask when you book.

Surfing Lifestyle & Benefits
Surfing improves cardio fitness, core strength, balance, and mental health, and it does it in a way that feels nothing like a traditional workout because you're too focused on the wave to notice you're exercising. It's also a genuinely great way to relieve stress and connect with nature. Time in the ocean has a meditative quality that's hard to replicate anywhere else, and many of my long-term students describe their sessions as the most effective mental reset they've found. Beyond the physical and mental benefits, there's the community, surf culture has a generosity and stoke to it that tends to spill over into the rest of your life.

Before: Light carbs & protein (bananas, oatmeal, toast)
After: Protein & hydration (eggs, smoothies, lean meat, coconut water)
Give yourself at least an hour after eating before getting in the water. You also sweat more than you think in a wetsuit, so drink water before and after every session.
The best preparation is showing up relaxed and ready to try something new. Wear a swimsuit you can move freely in, apply reef-safe sunscreen before you arrive, stay hydrated, and eat a light meal at least an hour before your session. We provide wetsuits and boards, so you don't need to worry about gear. Arrive a few minutes early to find parking and get comfortable with the equipment before we start. Most importantly, come with an open mind. Every student's first session looks different and that's completely fine. I've never had a student who didn't stand up by the end of a lesson when they approached it openly. Show up curious, and the ocean will do the rest.
Surfing etiquette is something I teach in every lesson because it makes the ocean safer and more enjoyable for everyone. The most important rule is right of way: the surfer closest to the peak of the breaking wave has priority — don't drop in on their wave. Always communicate, let others know which direction you're going, especially in a crowded lineup. Don't ditch your board; hold onto it for safety and to protect other surfers nearby. Only paddle out to a spot that suits your skill level, ask your instructor or a local if you're unsure. And always be friendly and respect the locals. The surf community at its best is generous and welcoming, and that starts with knowing the unwritten rules before you paddle out.
